Tutorials

I started giving one-to-one tutorials a couple of years ago as so many of my clients wanted to be able to recreate their wedding make-up. I decided to teach them, not just how to apply make-up for that particular look, but also how to apply their make-up speedily but professionally for work, interviews and for special occasions. Some clients want to know how to turn a daytime look into an evening look, how to take the minimum amount of products on holiday but to still make an impact, or simply how to refresh an outdated look.

I establish, firstly, their lifestyle and how work fits around that, then tailor make each tutorial to benefit that particular client. My “pupils” have ranged from schoolteachers to flight crew, from gap year students to lawyers. The lessons are broken down into 3 two hour or so stages and clients can choose whether or not to take all three in one go, or to break them down to doing 2 in one day, and the 3rd at a later stage, or the 1st stage followed by the last two.

Lessons are predominantly done at the least busy time of year. However, they can also be applied as a tutorial for a bride getting married abroad, so would be fitted in according to your schedule. If interested, just email me for availability and for price information. Usually they are done at my place in Kensington as accessibility of the make-up counters and where I can use my discounts are nearby. Also, I have facilities which provide great light and mirrors. If any of the stages have to be done at a client’s place, we can generally work something out but travel time and costs will be charged.

STAGE 1

makeupI go through the client’s make-up bag, discarding anything that is totally out of date or totally useless. It is surprising how many gimmicky products have been sold to unwitting shoppers! Or how many people have 3 eyes shadows virtually the same colour. Broken pencils are sharpened and cleaned up, brushes are cleaned. Then we talk about each person’s requirements. I then supply those looks by doing them for the client in a manner that I feel that they can achieve themselves. We use as many of the products that the client has already and some ideas of mine using my products. When we decide on the looks that are required, we can then go onto stage 2.

STAGE 2makeup

This involves a trip to the shops. As I will have already discussed with my clients their needs, we can go to get products. Knowing what is needed ensures that we use our time wisely. I generally recommend a decent but not exorbitantly priced set of brushes, any foundation that is bought is advised by myself alongside my client at the make-up counters, therefore giving them the confidence to stand in front of the most intimidating of sales staff without being pressurised into buying something that is inappropriate for them.

STAGE 3

makeupNow we go back and recreate all the looks with me showing clients how to apply it bit by bit and them following what I have done. We go over areas until the technique is perfected.

Upon leaving, I give everyone literature on how to practice, how to update looks for different occasions and how to prepare the skin for maximum success. Also a step by step document is given on how to achieve their looks. The trick, however is to practice often. That, I can only leave to them!
